Of the 8 Round 2 matches, we saw 3 upsets (according to seed), the biggest seeing #28 The Rescuers Down Under take down #21 Hercules. 101 Dalmatians and The Aristocats also beat higher seeded opponents, ensuring a big turnout for animal-led films in the Quarter Finals.
Joining them are The Lion King (holding steady against laugh out loud The Emperor’s New Groove) as well as Aladdin, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast. In perhaps the tightest contest of the round, our #1 seed Pinocchio just held off the mighty challenge of #16 seed Mulan in an epic match that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a semi-final.
Decades-wise we said goodbye to the 1950s representative (as Sleeping Beauty lost out to Snow White), our 1980s representative (as the relatively weak The Little Mermaid lost out to fan favourite Aladdin). and also our 2000s representative The Emperor’s New Groove. The 90s still hold sway with 4 out of the 8 undefeated competitors but intriguingly we will see 2 all 90s match-ups in the Quarter Finals ensuring the decade’s presence in the Semi Finals.
